Australian Sovereign 2025, set, three coins in a case

Since 1871, St George and the dragon have appeared on the Sovereigns of every monarch. The Perth Mint strikes it with a new St George and the portrait of Charles III.

1489 · Henry VII

A gold coin called Sovereign

In October 1489, Henry VII gave a new gold coin the name Sovereign. It was larger than anything England had issued before.

Under George III, the new Sovereign of 20 shillings replaced the guinea of 21 shillings. Benedetto Pistrucci, an Italian gem engraver, created St George and the dragon for it; in 1821 George received a sword in place of the broken lance.

1855 to 1923 · Branch mints

The “chief coin of the world”

That is what the Sovereign was called in the 19th century; it was accepted even in Brazil.

The Royal Mint also struck it at branch mints: Sydney from 1855, Melbourne 1872, Perth 1899, Ottawa 1908, Bombay 1918 and Pretoria 1923, almost 500 million pieces in all.

The Royal Canadian Mint, the Perth Mint and the South African Mint descend from these branch mints.

Perth · until 1931 and today

A new St George from Perth

Until 1931, Perth produced 106 million Sovereigns, each with Pistrucci’s St George.

Today the Australian Sovereign of the Perth Mint shows a new design: Jennifer McKenna draws an unclothed rider swinging his sword above the dragon. On the value side is Charles III, after Dan Thorne.

The Perth Mint · 2025

Three coins, one St George

The case holds a Sovereign, a Half and a Quarter Sovereign, with 25, 15 and 5 Dollars.

1536 and 1953 · The guardians

From Hampton Court to Westminster

On the bridge that Henry VIII had completed over the moat at Hampton Court in 1536 stood ten heraldic beasts, the King’s Beasts. Following their example, James Woodford created ten beasts in plaster for the coronation on 2 June 1953.

At Kew, copies in Portland stone stand guard outside the Palm House; the plaster figures have belonged to Canada since 1959.

The faces of the Crown

One face, seven decades

Mary Gillick showed Elizabeth II with a laurel wreath instead of a crown, and Jody Clark chose the diadem of her coronation in 2015: the first and the fifth of her portraits on British coins.

On British coins the portrait of Charles III is by Martin Jennings; the King approved it himself. The Queen’s British coins remained valid: some 27 billion were in circulation when the first circulating coins with Charles were struck.

The Perth Mint has created a masterpiece with this set, bringing the centuries-old tradition of Sovereign minting into the modern era.

A Set of Extraordinary Rarity

This exclusive set unites three gold coins in the highest minting quality Proof: the classic Australian Sovereign with 7.98 grams of pure gold, the Half Sovereign with 3.99 grams, and the Quarter Sovereign with 1.99 grams. Each individual coin is a work of art in its own right – together they form a harmonious unity of inestimable value.

"The Sovereign is considered one of the most tradition-rich gold coins in the world. With this limited set, the Perth Mint honours this magnificent numismatic history."

The Legendary Design of Saint George

Particularly fascinating is the timeless design: Saint George, depicted as a Roman guardian, vanquishing the fearsome dragon. This iconic scene has symbolised the triumph of good over evil for centuries. The intricate detailing in Proof quality allows every minute detail to shine – from the scales of the dragon to the folds in the saint's robes.

Why This Set Represents an Extraordinary Investment

The combination of several factors makes this set a rarity of the first order:

  1. The extremely low mintage of only 250 sets worldwide
  2. The highest minting quality "Proof"
  3. The historically significant Sovereign format
  4. The renowned Perth Mint as issuer
  5. The classic St. George design in a modern interpretation

Experienced collectors know: with such strictly limited editions, the appreciation potential is particularly pronounced. Comparable Gold Sovereign editions from previous years impressively demonstrate how sought-after these coins are on the market.

Technical Perfection Meets Numismatic Tradition

With a fineness of 917/1000, the set conforms to the traditional Sovereign standard. This proven alloy lends the coins not only their characteristic colour, but also exceptional durability. The total fine weight of 12.80 grams of fine gold is perfectly distributed across the three denominations.

The obverse features the current portrait of King Charles III, designed by Dan Thorne. Together with the respective face values of 25, 15 and 5 AUD, this underscores the official character of these Australian bullion coins.

Perfect Presentation for a Perfect Investment

The set is delivered in a high-quality original case that optimally protects and presents the coins. The enclosed numbered certificate of authenticity documents the authenticity and makes each set a unique piece. This thoughtful presentation underscores the exclusive character of this collector's coin.

For connoisseurs, it is clear: with such a low mintage of only 250 pieces worldwide, this set will sell out quickly. Experience shows that precisely such strictly limited editions from the Perth Mint are among the most sought-after collector's items. Those who hesitate may miss a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

While paper currencies come and go, gold has preserved its value over millennia. As the oldest currency of mankind, it offers security in uncertain times.
