It belongs to the pliosaurs, the short-necked plesiosaurs.
Like all plesiosaurs, it was a marine reptile and not a dinosaur.
No human has ever seen this animal alive: the age of the dinosaurs ended 66 million years ago, and the human genus has existed for about 2.8 million years.

Die Serie Prehistoric Life besteht aus Münzen, die jeweils mit einer schon langen ausgestorbenen Tierart geprägt sind. Das Münzmotiv dieser Silbermünze ist das achte Motiv der Serie.
✔ Der Liopleurodon – ein Meeressaurier
Das Motiv der Vorderseite der Münze ist der Liopleurodon. Dieser gehört zur Gattung Meeressaurier. Der hier dargestellte Liopleurodon ist gerade auf Beutejagd am Meeresgrund und sieht dabei unglaublich gefährlich aus. Ein kleiner Fisch versucht vor dem Saurier zu flüchten.
Furchteinflößend ist der Meeressaurier vor allem wegen seinem beeindruckenden Gebiss. Dieses besteht aus ungefähr 25 bis 28 scharfen Zähnen, die an einer Seite glatt sind. Daher hat er auch seinen Namen, denn Liopleurodon bedeutet „glatte Zähne“.
Der Liopleurodon war von 166 bis 163,5 Millionen Jahren vor Christus in den Gewässern Europas zu finden. Er lebte also zu Zeiten der Mitteljura. Das wird auf dem Münzmotiv auch angegeben.
