The call
In chorus with the family
koo-koo-koo-koo-koo-kaa-kaa-kaa
In German it is also called Lachender Hans, “laughing Hans”. But what sounds like laughter is a territorial call: it warns other birds to stay away, as the Australian Museum writes.
The family often calls in chorus, above all at dawn and dusk. This is how it tells other kookaburras that its territory is occupied.
In the breeding season other kookaburras help out, usually young birds from the previous one to two years. Everyone in the group shares the rearing, and the parents are believed to pair for life.
At around 42 centimetres and 340 grams on average, it is one of the largest kingfishers. It lives almost everywhere in eastern Australia where suitable trees grow.
The perch
It waits quietly on a perch with a good view, then drops straight down.
Under the loupe
The side with the kookaburra carries the weight, fineness and year, together with the mintmark of the Perth Mint.
On the other side: the effigy of King Charles III by Dan Thorne. The design is by Wade Robinson.

A design that takes your breath away
The reverse of this extraordinary coin depicts the Australian Kookaburra – affectionately known as the "Laughing Jack" – in a breathtakingly dynamic flying pose. With wings spread wide, the iconic bird glides over a typically Australian landscape. Every single feather has been worked out with almost obsessive attention to detail: flight feathers, covert feathers, breast plumage – all delicately rendered in the highest relief. The Kookaburra's characteristic strong beak immediately catches the eye.
In the background, a gnarled, wind-shaped eucalyptus tree with a sprawling crown rises up, while rugged rock formations and delicate tufts of grass in the lower section capture the wild beauty of the Australian outback. The lettering "KOOKABURRA" arches elegantly across the right half of the coin – with the decorative "K" serving as a striking eye-catcher. On the left runs the vertical inscription "2026 1oz 9999 SILVER", complemented by the "P" mint mark of the Perth Mint.
The obverse features the portrait of King Charles III in profile, framed by the inscription "CHARLES III · AUSTRALIA" and the face value "1 DOLLAR". Here too, the gilding impresses with a warm, rich golden hue that lends the fine silver a very special appearance.

Silver – more than just a precious metal
Silver looks back on a thousand-year history as a medium of currency and store of value. Various cultures and civilizations used it as a medium of trade and as a symbol of wealth and prestige. Today, the white precious metal is experiencing a renaissance: industrial demand – particularly in electronics, solar technology and medicine – continues to rise steadily. At the same time, natural reserves are limited, which bodes well for long-term value stability.
Of particular interest to investors: profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. Silver is also often more affordable compared to gold, offering an attractive entry point into the world of physical precious metals. Its high liquidity makes it easy to convert the metal into cash at any time.
Who is this coin for?
Quite clearly: this gilded Kookaburra special edition is aimed at passionate collectors seeking the extraordinary. Anyone who already owns the regular annual issues of the Kookaburra series will find it hard to pass up this highlight. But newcomers wishing to dive into the fascinating world of numismatics with a special piece will also be making an excellent choice here.
The very low mintage of just 2,500 specimens means this coin is likely to quickly become a sought-after rarity on the secondary market. Experience shows that such strictly limited special editions from the Perth Mint tend to become genuine treasures in any collection – with corresponding appreciation potential.
