The call
In chorus with the family
koo-koo-koo-koo-koo-kaa-kaa-kaa
In German it is also called Lachender Hans, “laughing Hans”. But what sounds like laughter is a territorial call: it warns other birds to stay away, as the Australian Museum writes.
The family often calls in chorus, above all at dawn and dusk. This is how it tells other kookaburras that its territory is occupied.
In the breeding season other kookaburras help out, usually young birds from the previous one to two years. Everyone in the group shares the rearing, and the parents are believed to pair for life.
At around 42 centimetres and 340 grams on average, it is one of the largest kingfishers. It lives almost everywhere in eastern Australia where suitable trees grow.
The perch
It waits quietly on a perch with a good view, then drops straight down.
Under the loupe
The side with the kookaburra carries the weight, fineness and year, together with the mintmark of the Perth Mint.
On the other side: the effigy of King Charles III by Dan Thorne. The design is by Sean Rogers.

How the years show it

Your search for an exclusive collector's coin ends here. We proudly present the 5 oz Silver Kookaburra 2024 – an outstanding masterpiece from the Perth Mint. This rarity is special not only due to its strict limitation to just 500 pieces worldwide, but also because of its breathtaking design and exceptional minting quality.
The design of the coin shows a majestic Kookaburra, Australia's laughing jack, in full flight over a gorge. In its sharp claws, it holds a captured snake – a symbol of strength and the struggle for survival in the wild. The High Relief minting gives the bird and the entire scene an impressive three-dimensionality, with the precision of detail and the texture of the feathers being almost lifelike. The inscription "KOOKABURRA", the mint mark "P125" for the 125th anniversary of the Perth Mint, the year of issue, the weight and the fineness of the coin skillfully round off the design. The reverse features the Dan Thorne effigy of King Charles III and the face value "8 DOLLARS", making this coin a historical testament to the current era.
The Perth Mint has surpassed itself in the production of this collector's coin. With a diameter of 50.90 mm and a fine weight of 155.52 g, this silver coin impresses with its size and weight. The coin is delivered in an elegant display stand, which provides it with a fitting frame and makes it the ideal showpiece for any collector.
As an investment in silver coins, the Kookaburra 2024 offers not only a very low mintage and thus high value appreciation potential, but also tax advantages. Profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free in Germany, provided the holding period is at least one year. In addition, silver is a sought-after industrial metal with limited availability, making the coin a stable long-term investment.
