From the rock

Its skeleton is the most complete of a theropod found in Australia.

It was found near Winton in Queensland. Tyrannosaurus rex also belongs to the theropods.

No human has ever seen this animal alive: the age of the dinosaurs ended 66 million years ago, and the human genus has existed for about 2.8 million years.

Der Australovenator lebte auf dem Gebiet, das uns heute als Australien bekannt ist. Er gehört der Familie der Theropoden an und wurde mittelgroß. In der zeitlichen Einordnung ist er der späten Unterkreidezeit vor 112-100 Millionen Jahren zuzuordnen. Er konnte ein Länge von bis zu sechs Metern einnehmen. Während sein Gewicht locker bis zu eine halbe Tonne betragen konnte, lag seine Höhe bei ca. 2,50m. Er galt als Fleischfresser.

Den Knochenfunden und der Rekonstruktionen nach wird davon ausgegangen, dass es sich um einen Spitzen-Prädator handelte. Dieser sollte vornehmlich Sauropoden der mittleren Größe gejagt und gefressen haben. Als wichtigster Fossilfundort ist die Winton Formation zu nennen. Diese befindet sich in Elderslie an der Station Queensland. Zu den bis heute gefundenen Überresten gehören mitunter neun Zähne, Rippenfragmente, einzelne Rippen, linker Unterkiefer, den Mittelfußknochen mit Zehen- und Fußgliedern.
