The animal of the year

A design by Sean Rogers

The line above follows the description of The Perth Mint.

The year’s silver coin bears a different image, also by Sean Rogers: a snake on the ground beneath hanging leaves.

In Chinese culture, bamboo is synonymous with virtue and integrity, writes The Perth Mint.

The character 蛇

On the right of the field is the Chinese character for snake, below it SNAKE 2025, on the left the P of The Perth Mint.

The Year of the Snake began on 29 January 2025.

The series

One animal a year since 1996

In 1996 The Perth Mint became the first mint to release an Australian lunar programme, as it states. Each series follows the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac: Lunar I from 1996 to 2007, Lunar II from 2008 to 2019, Lunar III from 2020 to 2031.

Each year one animal is added, and the snake, the horse and the goat each have separate designs for gold and silver. The snake is the sixth animal of Lunar III, the horse the seventh, the goat the eighth.

The snake of 2025 is the first animal of Lunar III whose bullion coins show King Charles III, in the portrait by Dan Thorne. For the dragon of 2024 it was still Elizabeth II.

The mint

The P of Perth

The Perth Mint was founded in a gold rush. In 1892 a find near Coolgardie set off Australia’s second great gold rush of the 19th century. Premier Sir John Forrest did not want the gold to leave Western Australia for processing and secured a branch of the Royal Mint in Perth.

On 20 June 1899 the first gold was processed and struck there, and The Perth Mint has operated continuously on the same site in East Perth ever since. The sovereigns from Perth carried a small P above the date.

The designs of the snake, the horse and the goat also bear a P, as The Perth Mint’s mintmark. Today it is owned by the State of Western Australia.

The bullion coin in gold

The gold bullion coin comes in sizes from 1/20 ounce up to 10 ounces, each with the same design. It is legal tender in Australia.

The design contains a micro-engraved mark intended to make counterfeiting harder. It can only be made out with a magnifying glass.

A Valuable Addition to Your Investment Portfolio

Gold has been a stable and proven store of value for over 6,000 years. It has never reached a value of zero, as it possesses intrinsic value. In times of economic uncertainty, gold coins protect against loss of purchasing power and provide a hedge against inflation and currency risks. Furthermore, profits from the sale of gold are generally tax-free if the holding period is at least one year.

The World's Oldest Currency

Gold is the world's oldest currency and is recognised globally as a medium of exchange and store of value. It is VAT-free and has high liquidity, meaning it can easily be converted into cash. These properties make gold an ideal addition to any investment portfolio.

Protection Against Political and Economic Crises

In times of political and economic uncertainty, gold offers reliable protection. It has a low correlation to other asset classes such as equities and bonds, which contributes to portfolio diversification. In addition, gold is held by central banks worldwide as a reserve currency to support the stability of the financial system.

A Legacy for Future Generations

Gold can serve as a long-term retirement provision and pass wealth from generation to generation. It is a scarce commodity with a limited supply, which leads to long-term value stability. While fiat money is printed and controlled by central banks, the availability and supply of gold is limited, which contributes to the stability of its value.

Conclusion

The 1 oz Gold Lunar III Snake 2025 is an outstanding choice for anyone wishing to invest in Gold Lunar. With its exquisite design, high fineness, and limited mintage, it is both a valuable collector's item and a solid investment option.
