The new special edition of the Gold Krugerrand with the Burgers Pond Privy Mark is an extraordinary tribute to the origins of South African gold coins, uniting two icons of numismatic history. This world first combines the globally celebrated Krugerrand with a striking detail: the Privy Mark of the Burgers Pond – the "original form" of the Krugerrand. This one-of-a-kind issue is available exclusively at Kettner Edelmetalle!

The Burgers Pond – The Original Form of the World-Famous Krugerrand

The Burgers Pond from the former Transvaal Republic marks the first attempt to cast South African gold into its own currency, thereby laying the foundation for what would later become known worldwide as the Krugerrand. The coin, minted in 1874, is closely tied to the history and identity of South Africa, as it was the first coin made from the country's rich gold deposits. This makes the Burgers Pond a direct predecessor of the Krugerrand, which was introduced in 1967 as a symbol of South Africa's gold market.

The obverse of the Burgers Pond bears the portrait of Thomas Francois Burger, the fourth president of the Transvaal Republic, while the reverse displays the national coat of arms. President Burger had the visionary plan to create a national coin from the gold of his homeland – a bold step that laid the groundwork for the later success story of the Krugerrand. Yet while the Burgers Pond went down in history as the first South African gold coin, its journey was anything but easy.

A Historic Legacy

In 1873, Burger, without consulting his own parliament, sent 300 ounces of gold to London to have coins minted modeled on the English pound. At the firm of Ralph Heaton and Sons in Birmingham, 837 coins were ultimately struck. However, when Burger presented them to the Volksraad, the parliament of the Transvaal Republic, the coin was indignantly rejected. It never entered official circulation, and its commercial purpose failed. Instead, most Burgers Pond coins were used as jewelry or keepsakes – many of which were lost or destroyed over time.

Although the Burgers Pond failed to fulfill its economic role, it later became a numismatic treasure. With the discovery of the coin's numismatic value in the late 19th century, a passion began for the few remaining specimens that continues to this day. Particularly interesting is the fact that there are two variants of the coin – one with a fine beard and one with a coarse beard in Burger's portrait.

While the Burgers Pond itself never entered trade, it marked the beginning of a significant tradition of South African gold coins. Its creation paved the way for the Krugerrand, which, nearly 100 years later in a completely different era, would become a worldwide symbol of the South African gold market. Thus, the Burgers Pond is not only a rare collector's item but also a historical testimony reflecting the origin of the Krugerrand – the first vision of a coin made from the gold of the land that was once Transvaal.

Unique Collector's Item with High Value Appreciation Potential

In commemoration of this heritage, this special edition is strictly limited and impressively combines tradition and modernity. The obverse shows, as usual, the portrait of Paul Kruger, while the striking Privy Mark of the Burgers Pond is subtly integrated. This coin thus honors not only the history of South Africa but also the transition from the first South African gold coin to the legendary Krugerrand series – a connection between two numismatic legends!

The 1/4 oz Gold Krugerrand Burgers Pond Privy Mark 2024 Proof is crafted in the highest minting quality "Proof" (PP) and is delivered in an elegant case. This collector's coin is not only a visual highlight but also a valuable investment.
