The new special edition of the Krugerrand with the privy mark of the Burgers Pond is an extraordinary tribute to the origins of South African gold coins and unites two icons of numismatic history. This world premiere combines the globally celebrated Gold Krugerrand with a striking detail: the privy mark of the Burgers Pond – the "original form" of the Krugerrand. You will find this unique edition exclusively at Kettner Edelmetalle!
The Burgers Pond – the original form of the world-famous Krugerrand
The Burgers Pond from the former Transvaal Republic marks the first attempt to cast South African gold into its own currency, thereby laying the foundation for what would later become known worldwide as the Krugerrand. The coin, minted in 1874, is closely linked to the history and identity of South Africa, as it was the first coin made from the country's rich gold deposits. This makes the Burgers Pond a direct predecessor of the Krugerrand, which was introduced in 1967 as a symbol of South Africa's gold market.
The obverse of the Burgers Pond bears the portrait of Thomas Francois Burgers, the fourth president of the Transvaal Republic, while the reverse shows the national coat of arms. President Burgers had the visionary plan to create a national coin from the gold of his homeland – a bold step that laid the foundation for the later success story of the Krugerrand. Yet while the Burgers Pond went down in history as the first South African gold coin, its journey was anything but easy.
A coin with history and rarity
In 1873, Burgers, without consulting his own parliament, sent 300 ounces of gold to London to have coins minted modeled on the English pound. The firm of Ralph Heaton and Sons in Birmingham eventually minted 837 coins. However, when Burgers presented these to the Volksraad, the parliament of the Transvaal Republic, the coin was indignantly rejected. It never entered official circulation and its commercial concept failed. Instead, most Burgers Ponds were used as pieces of jewelry or keepsakes – many of which were lost or destroyed over time.
Although the Burgers Pond failed in its economic role, it later became a numismatic treasure. With the discovery of the coin's numismatic value in the late 19th century, a passion began for the few remaining specimens that continues to this day. Particularly interesting is the fact that there are two variants of the coin – one with a fine beard and one with a coarse beard in Burgers' portrait.
Tradition and modernity united
While the Burgers Pond itself never entered circulation, it marked the beginning of a significant tradition of South African gold coins. Its production paved the way for the Krugerrand, which, almost 100 years later in a completely different era, would become a worldwide symbol of the South African gold market. Thus, the Burgers Pond is not only a rare collector's item but also a historical testament reflecting the origin of the Krugerrand – the first vision of a coin made from the gold of the country that was once Transvaal.
In commemoration of this, this special edition is strictly limited and impressively combines tradition and modernity. As usual, the obverse shows the portrait of Paul Kruger, while the distinctive privy mark of the Burgers Pond is subtly integrated. This coin thus honors not only the history of South Africa but also the transition from the first South African gold coin to the legendary Krugerrand series - a connection between two numismatic legends!
This special rarity with a very low mintage of only 500 pieces worldwide is more than just a collector's coin; it is a piece of history and a valuable investment. Produced with the highest minting quality "Proof" (PP), this coin offers outstanding potential for value appreciation and is a must-have for every discerning collector.
