Bödvar 2026, 2 ounces of fine silver, design side

Two men face each other in high relief, so sculptural that the light travels over every edge. Two ounces of silver from the series Bödvar Saga.

The names in our week

Three names we say every week.

Thursday, Friday and Wednesday still carry names from this world of gods. In German, Donnerstag and Freitag do too, formed on the model of the Roman week, but Mittwoch has lost its old name.

Merseburg · 10th century

Two charms, not found until 1841.

In the 10th century, two charms were written in an Old High German dialect on the front of a leaf. The manuscript is held in the cathedral chapter library in Merseburg.

In 1841 the historian Georg Waitz found the lines in the library of the cathedral chapter, and the following year Jacob Grimm called the manuscript a “treasure”.

According to the cathedral chapter, they are the only pagan incantations preserved in Germany and the only known Old High German record that shows figures of this world of gods in action: Wodan, Balder, Friia, Volla, Sunna, Phol and Sinhtgunt.

“Phol ende Uuodan uuorun zi holza.” Phol and Wodan made their way into the wood.
Second Merseburg Charm, translation after Eichner and Nedoma

Iceland · around 1220

A textbook for young poets.

Around 1220 the Icelander Snorri Sturluson, 1179 to 1241, wrote his Edda. According to Britannica, it was meant to teach young poets the difficult metres and to make the old material understandable to a Christian age.

Two of its parts are called Gylfaginning, “The Beguiling of Gylfi”, and Skáldskaparmál, “The Language of Poetry”. For his account of the gods, Snorri cites poems that also appear in the Codex Regius.

Codex Regius · 45 leaves

A book on which the poems depend.

A parchment book from the late 13th century, its scribe unknown. According to the Árni Magnússon Institute, it is the oldest and most important surviving collection of Eddic poems, and most of the poems exist nowhere else but here and in copies of it.

At the front stand the poems about the gods, headed by the Völuspá. Nothing is known of the book’s path until 1643, when Bishop Brynjólfur Sveinsson wrote his initials and the year into it; eight leaves were already missing.

In 1662 the bishop sent the book to King Frederick III in Copenhagen. It stayed there for more than three centuries.

The third place

Where each figure has come down to us.

The craft

How this strike is made.

Struck by the Germania Mint. The value side names no state, only GERMANIA and the stated value 10 Mark.

Antique finish
The surface is deliberately patinated. In the recesses the silver stays dark, on the high points it shines bright, so that every edge stands out.
Ultra High Relief
The design stands out especially far from the field, and in raking light every figure becomes sculptural.

To scale

Reykjavík · 21 April 1971

On 21 April 1971 the Danish naval ship “Vædderen” docked in Reykjavík. The harbour was crowded as naval officers carried ashore three parcels in brown paper, with the Codex Regius and the Flateyjarbók inside.

The books are back in Iceland and are kept in Reykjavík today. We say the names every week.

“Has the whole population ever gathered with enthusiasm to receive two books?”
Prime Minister Jóhann Hafstein on 21 April 1971, as quoted in Kristeligt Dagblad

The 2 oz Silver Bödvar Saga Loss 2026 belongs to those collector's coins that you don't simply buy – you secure them. Because with a mintage of only 500 pieces worldwide, one thing is certain: whoever hesitates will go away empty-handed.

The Bödvar Saga – Nordic Heroic Poetry Immortalized in Silver

Bödvar Bjarki, the legendary warrior of Old Norse tradition, is considered one of the most powerful heroes in Scandinavian mythology. His story – marked by courage, transformation, and the eternal struggle between light and darkness – finds a visually stunning depiction on this coin. The design captures the raw power and mystical aura of this legendary figure with a fidelity to detail that is simply remarkable. Every fiber, every contour tells a piece of this ancient story.

The Bödvar Saga series has already earned an excellent reputation among collectors. And this edition – "Loss" – adds another, emotional chapter to the narrative. Loss, sacrifice, fate: themes that are timeless and become tangible in the artistic design of this coin.

Ultra High Relief and Antique Finish – When Technique Becomes Art

Ordinary minting? Not here. The Ultra High Relief technique raises the design far above the coin's surface, creating an almost sculptural three-dimensionality. You can feel the contours beneath your fingertips – a tactile experience that flat, standard mintings can never offer.

The Antique Finish additionally gives the coin the character of a centuries-old artifact. Dark patina in the recesses, gently shimmering raised areas – this contrast makes the Bödvar design appear truly alive. It is as if you were holding a relic from a long-forgotten era in your hands.

A coin that is not merely viewed, but experienced. The combination of Ultra High Relief and Antique Finish makes each and every one of the 500 pieces a small work of art.

Why This Coin Is So Special for Collectors

The market for silver coins with low mintages is fiercely contested. 500 pieces – that is vanishingly few. For comparison: popular bullion coins such as the Maple Leaf or the Vienna Philharmonic are minted in the millions. Here we are talking about a rarity that plays in a completely different league.

With 2 ounces of fine silver, the Bödvar Saga Loss also brings substantial weight to the scale. The 45 mm diameter gives the engraver ample surface area to unfold the design in all its splendor. And the reeded edge design harmoniously rounds off the overall picture – a detail that connoisseurs know to appreciate.

The strictly limited mintage, paired with the elaborate Ultra High Relief minting and the coveted Antique Finish, makes this edition a true highlight of the 2026 vintage. Anyone who already collects the Bödvar Saga will not want to miss this piece. And anyone new to the series will find an impressive starting point here.

Who Is This Coin For?

Quite clearly: for the discerning collector. For someone who seeks the extraordinary and knows that genuine rarities cannot be found around every corner. The Bödvar Saga Loss 2026 combines mythological depth, craftsmanship perfection, and a very low mintage into an overall package that is unparalleled. Secure your piece before the last ones are sold out – because with only 500 coins worldwide, it is not a question of if, but of when.
