The reverse is called “Soaring Bald Eagle” and is the work of Thomas D. Rogers Sr., Sculptor-Engraver at the United States Mint. A bald eagle glides with outstretched wings over the sun on the horizon.
On the right of the field stand .9995 PLATINUM and 1 oz., at the bottom the face value, $100.
The coin in detail
Authorised by Congress in 1996
Congress authorised the platinum coin in 1996, and the United States Mint first issued it the following year. The design, face value and dimensions are set not by the law but by the Secretary of the Treasury.
The one-ounce coin carries a $100 face value and the marking .9995. Its purity is guaranteed by the United States Government, according to the United States Mint.

✔ Der Weißkopfseeadler – das Symbol der USA
Das Motiv dieser Platinmünze ist der bekannte Weißkopfseeadler. Dieser befindet sich mitten im Flug und hat seine großen Flügel weit gespannt. Im Hintergrund ist die strahlende Sonne zu sehen. Über dem Vogel steht groß United States of America geschrieben.
Der Weißkopfseeadler gilt seit Jahrhunderten als das Symbol der USA und ist auch seit 1782 das Wappentier des Landes. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams und Benjamin Franklin bereiteten damals verschiedene Motive vor, unter anderem den Adler. Charles Thomson, ein ehemaliger Politiker und Schriftsteller, machte daraus letztendlich den Weißkopfseeadler.
Benjamin Franklin war jedoch kein Freund dieser Idee und beschrieb in einem Brief an seine Tochter die schlechten Eigenschaften des Vogels. Er schlug den Truthahn vor, da dieser in Nord- und Mittelamerika beheimatet ist. Der Weißkopfadler siegte jedoch, da dieser anschaulicher ist als der Truthahn.
✔ In God we trust – das Motto der USA
Auf der Rückseite der Münze ist die Freiheitsstatue abgebildet, die das amerikanische Volk 1886 von den Franzosen geschenkt bekommen hat. Die Statue stellt die römische Göttin der Freiheit dar, Libertas. Sie ist sowohl ein Symbol für Freiheit als auch für die USA. Genau wie der Weißkopfseeadler.
Das Motto der USA ist ebenfalls auf der Wertseite eingraviert: In God we trust. Dieser Spruch stammt aus einer Zeile der amerikanischen Nationalhymne. In der heißt es: And this be our motto: In God is our trust.
