Palladium bar · 50 g

Palladium first had to prove that it existed.50 g fine palladium, named after Pallas.

50 g palladium bar

Made of fine palladium with a fineness of 999.5/1,000. A metal that a chemist took for an alloy in 1803 and that takes its name from a celestial body.

New silver from Gerrard Street

A notice with no sender.

In 1803 a printed notice with no sender announced a new noble metal in London: “Palladium, or new silver”. It was to be had only from Mr. Forster, No. 26, Gerrard Street, Soho.

The chemist Chenevix distrusted the anonymous approach and bought up the entire stock. He declared the metal to be an alloy of platinum and mercury. He found the properties listed on the notice correctly stated, all except the specific gravity.

In 1805 the mystery was solved before the Royal Society: William Hyde Wollaston had found the metal and had announced it himself, anonymously. He did not reveal what he had extracted it from, so that he could examine at leisure the puzzles in platinum behind which rhodium was hiding.

London, 1803

“Palladium, or new silver”

“… a new noble metal”

“It is sold only by Mr. Forster”

No. 26Gerrard Street, Soho, London

Wording of the notice as given by Chenevix, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, 1803.

The name from the sky

A name from the sky over Bremen.

On 28 March 1802 the astronomer Wilhelm Olbers discovered a new celestial body in Bremen: Pallas. Wollaston called it a planet; today Pallas is counted among the asteroids.

Wollaston named his metal after it. The manuscript in which he explained his discovery in 1805 is kept to this day in the archive of the Royal Society.

Wollaston, 1805

“… another metal, to which I gave the name of Palladium, from the planet that had been discovered nearly at the same time by Dr. Olbers.”
Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, read on 4 July 1805.

The metal

The lightest of the platinum metals.

Palladium is silver-white and does not tarnish in air. It is the lightest and lowest-melting metal of the platinum group. This bar is fine palladium with a fineness of 999.5/1,000.

  • Density 12.0 g/cm³, melting point around 1,555 °C
  • At room temperature, palladium absorbs up to 900 times its own volume of hydrogen.

Measure of all masses

Platinum was entrusted with the kilogram.

From 1889 to 2019, the kilogram was a cylinder of platinum with 10 per cent iridium, 39 millimetres high and just as wide. It lay under three bell jars at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Sèvres near Paris.

Welche Barren bezieht Kettner-Edelmetalle?
