On the cave wall
In the Chauvet Cave there are about 300 hollows where bears hibernated.
Along with more than 3,700 cave bear bones and thousands of scratch marks on the walls.
In the Chauvet Cave, mammoths, big cats, rhinoceroses and bears are among the most frequent animal images. People first entered the cave about 36,500 years ago.

1 Unze Goldmünze Giganten der Eiszeit – Höhlenbär 2020 PP im Etui
Diese beeindruckende Serie widmet sich in gebührendem Respekt den Bestien, auf die einst sogar noch unsere Vorfahren Jagd machten – oder vielleicht gar selbst zur Beute wurden! Knochen und Höhlenmalereien regten die Fantasie der Designer an, das Andenken an die Giganten der Eiszeit zu bewahren. Das Ergebnis ist eine Serie mit sechs prähistorischen Tieren, vor einer eiszeitlichen Landschaft malerisch in Szene gesetzt.
Das 4. Motiv erinnert an den einst mit Sicherheit gefürchteten Höhlenbären, dessen Namen bereits auf den Fundort der Knochen verweist. Er wurde bis zu 3,5 Meter lang und maß bis zur Schulter 1,7 Meter – weitaus größer als seine heutigen lebenden Verwandten die Braunbären. Um sein Revier mit Duftstoffen zu markieren, rieb er sich gerne an Höhlenwänden, sodass diese Spuren noch heute im Harz zu erkennen sind. Der sich vorwiegend vegetarisch ernährende Bär starb vor 40.000 allmählich aus. Inwiefern der Klimawechsel oder das Auftreten des Menschen hierbei eine Rolle spielte, ist stark unter Paläontologen umstritten.
