The portrait side

A portrait from 1892: Paul Kruger on the Krugerrand 2027.

Paul Kruger in profile, framed by SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. The likeness was crafted by the die engraver Otto Schultz, and according to the South African Mint it is struck from the original die of the 1892 Kruger half crown. The name Krugerrand joins Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency. The rand also recalls the Witwatersrand, the “ridge of white water”.

On 3 July 1967, the South African Mint struck the first Krugerrand. Sixty years later, it celebrates this date with an issue you don't see every day: the 2 oz gold Krugerrand 2027 in Proof, enhanced with a specially created anniversary privy mark. The mintage of just 200 pieces makes this proof coin a true rarity and a highlight for anyone who collects gold coins with history.

Six decades of the Krugerrand – an anniversary you can hold in your hand

The Krugerrand was the world's first bullion coin whose weight was stated in troy ounces. In doing so, it made history. Around 1980, the South African coin accounted for more than 90 percent of the global market for gold coins. To this day, it remains one of the most widely traded bullion coins of all, standing alongside classics such as the Maple Leaf or the Vienna Philharmonic.

The design has remained virtually unchanged since 1967. That is precisely why the small detail on this issue stands out so clearly: to the upper left of the springbok sits a round privy mark bearing the number "60", framed by "1967 · 2027" and "Year Anniversary". Anyone familiar with the 2017 issues featuring the privy mark for the 50th anniversary knows just how sought-after such anniversary marks are among collectors. The 60-year edition builds directly on that legacy.

Springbok and president: the designs in detail

On the obverse, the springbok is captured mid-leap. South Africa's national animal was designed in 1947 by sculptor Coert Steynberg, whose initials appear discreetly in the lower right. Above it is the inscription "KRUGERRAND", with the year of issue "20 27" split to the left and right of the animal. Along the bottom edge, bilingual text reads "FYNGOUD 2 OZ FINE GOLD".

The reverse displays the striking profile of Paul Kruger with his full beard, surrounded by the legend "SUID-AFRIKA · SOUTH AFRICA". Kruger, popularly known as "Oom Paul", shaped an entire era as president of the South African Republic.

Proof – minting quality for connoisseurs

Coins struck in Proof quality use highly polished dies and carefully prepared blanks, with each coin struck multiple times and with particular care. The result is mirror-smooth fields against which the frosted designs stand out in almost three-dimensional relief. On the large 40 mm format of the 2 oz Krugerrand, this contrast is especially striking: every strand of Kruger's beard and every muscle of the springbok becomes visible.

An anniversary privy mark, a large proof format and a strictly limited mintage: this combination makes the 2 oz Krugerrand 2027 a piece that cannot simply be reordered at will.

Comparison: anniversary proof or classic bullion Krugerrand?

  • Bullion Krugerrand (Brilliant Uncirculated): struck without a fixed mintage and ideal for pure gold accumulation, but without the appeal of a limited edition.
  • 1 oz Krugerrand Proof: elegant and versatile, though with significantly higher mintages.
  • 2 oz Krugerrand Proof 2027 with Privy Mark: double the gold content, a large format, an anniversary mark, and a limitation to 200 pieces. This is the most exclusive variant of this year's issue.

For collectors, this means: anyone who decides now secures the issue right at its release. Later on, it will likely only be available on the secondary market.

Gold – a brilliance that endures

For over 6,000 years, people have placed their trust in this metal. Even in ancient Egypt it served as a standard of trade, later adorning kings and emperors. Gold is the oldest currency in the world. Thanks to its intrinsic value, it has never been worthless, and it is recognized worldwide. Central banks, too, rank among the largest holders of gold. For collectors, this is a reassuring foundation: behind every Krugerrand rarity stands genuine precious metal that can be passed down through generations.

A welcome bonus: in Germany, profits from the sale of physical gold are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. In addition, investment gold, which includes the Krugerrand, is exempt from VAT.

Whether as the centerpiece of a Krugerrand collection, as a gift for a special occasion, or as a memento of 60 years of coinage history: this anniversary edition combines exclusivity, tradition and considerable appreciation potential. Secure one of only 200 pieces of this special collector's coin while the opportunity lasts.
