The anniversary mark
Above the springbok’s back: 60 years of the Krugerrand.
For the anniversary, the Krugerrand 2027 carries a round mark. It sits above the springbok’s back, to the left of its head and horns.

The portrait side
A portrait from 1892: Paul Kruger on the Krugerrand 2027.
Paul Kruger in profile, framed by SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. The likeness was crafted by the die engraver Otto Schultz, and according to the South African Mint it is struck from the original die of the 1892 Kruger half crown. The name Krugerrand joins Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency. The rand also recalls the Witwatersrand, the “ridge of white water”.

Sixty years. That's how long South Africa has been minting the Krugerrand, and hardly any coin has shaped the precious metals market as much. For this milestone anniversary, the South African Mint is issuing the 1/4 ounce gold Krugerrand 2027 as a special edition. It comes in the highest minting quality, in an elegant case, with a certificate of authenticity and a specially designed privy mark. With a mintage of just 3,000 pieces, this edition is among the rarest modern gold coins from South Africa. Whoever owns it holds a piece of numismatic history in their hands.
A Privy Mark for Six Decades of Gold History
The first Krugerrand was issued in 1967. It was the first modern bullion coin whose fine weight corresponded exactly to one troy ounce. This concept was later adopted by the Maple Leaf, Vienna Philharmonic, and American Eagle. Starting in 1980, smaller denominations were added, including the quarter ounce. Today, 60 years later, the South African Mint honors this legacy with a small but significant detail: above the springbok sits a round privy mark bearing the number "60". It is framed by the years 1967 • 2027 and the inscription "Year Anniversary". Already on its 50th anniversary in 2017, South Africa celebrated its classic with an anniversary edition that collectors still seek out today.
The Design in Detail
The obverse shows Paul Kruger in profile, surrounded by the bilingual inscription "SUID-AFRIKA • SOUTH AFRICA". On the reverse, the springbok leaps across the South African veld, based on the famous design by Coert Steynberg. Above it reads "1/4 KRUGERRAND". The year of minting is split into "20" and "27" on the left and right, and below, the legend "FYNGOUD 1/4 OZ FINE GOLD" states the gold content. There is no imprinted face value. As with every Krugerrand, its value derives from the precious metal it contains, and in this edition, additionally from its rarity.
Proof: Mirror Finish Perfected
For Proof quality, the dies and blanks are polished to a high gloss, and each coin is struck multiple times. The result is deep, mirror-like fields against which Kruger and the springbok appear as if chiseled. Every strand of the beard and every muscle of the animal is visible. To preserve this finish, the coin is delivered in a case, which is also the best place to keep it.
Why the quarter ounce in particular? With 7.78 g of fine gold, it represents the golden middle of the series: more valuable than the 1/10 ounce, yet significantly more flexible than the full ounce. It also allows you to sell individual coins if you need cash, while the rest of your holdings remain untouched.

Anniversary Krugerrand, Maple Leaf, or Vienna Philharmonic?
There are many quarter-ounce gold coins available. The Maple Leaf, Vienna Philharmonic, and Britannia are made of 999.9 fine gold. This makes them soft, and scratches occur quickly. The Krugerrand, by contrast, relies on its 22-karat alloy with copper. It is more robust, more durable, and has a distinctive color tone.
It's also worth taking a look within its own series. The regular 1/4 ounce in Brilliant Uncirculated is minted without a mintage limit and is priced closer to the pure gold value. It is ideal for classic wealth building. The anniversary edition in Proof offers the same gold content plus added numismatic value. This added value comes from the very low mintage, the flawless surface, and the unique privy mark. Collectors pay a premium for this exclusivity. Yet it is precisely this limitation that makes collectors value such special editions so highly.
Why Gold Has Enjoyed Trust for Over 6,000 Years
Gold is the world's oldest currency. Even in ancient Egypt, it served as a measure for trade. Later, it facilitated the exchange of goods along the Silk Road, and well into the 20th century, the gold standard underpinned entire currency systems. Paper money has come and gone, but gold has remained. It has never had a value of zero, because it possesses an intrinsic worth that no central bank can arbitrarily increase.
"Money is gold, and nothing else." – J. P. Morgan, 1912
It's no coincidence that central banks are among the largest gold holders in the world. This precious metal protects against loss of purchasing power, is recognized worldwide, and can be converted to cash at any time. It can also be passed down through generations. For investors in Germany, there are additional tax advantages: as investment gold, the Krugerrand gold coin is exempt from VAT under § 25c UStG. Profits from its sale are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.
Who This Anniversary Coin Is Right For
This collector's coin fits perfectly into any Krugerrand collection looking to grow with a true milestone piece. However, it is equally suitable for gold investors who want to combine physical precious metal with rarity value. It also makes an excellent gift for a milestone birthday or company anniversary, as hardly any coin tells such a compelling story. Secure one of only 3,000 pieces of this anniversary edition.
