The portrait side

A portrait from 1892: Paul Kruger on the Krugerrand 2027.

Paul Kruger in profile, framed by SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. The likeness was crafted by the die engraver Otto Schultz, and according to the South African Mint it is struck from the original die of the 1892 Kruger half crown. The name Krugerrand joins Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency. The rand also recalls the Witwatersrand, the “ridge of white water”.

60 Years of the Krugerrand: The 2027 Anniversary Ounce in Proof

  • Strictly limited: only 1,000 pieces worldwide – a very low mintage for South Africa's most famous coin name
  • Growth potential: very high appreciation potential thanks to strict limitation and strong demand among Krugerrand collectors
  • Rarity for the anniversary: a rare collector's coin with an exclusive “60 Year Anniversary” privy mark
  • Minting quality: the highest possible grade Proof – mirror-like fields, finely frosted reliefs
  • Special feature: the world's most popular gold bullion coin and the role model for all modern gold coins
  • Investment goal: collector's joy and value preservation, complemented by classic inflation hedge and crisis protection
  • Obverse design: portrait of Paul Kruger, President of the South African Republic from 1882–1902
  • Reverse design: the leaping springbok, South Africa's national animal – in this year of issue featuring the round anniversary mark “1967 • 2027 · 60 Year Anniversary”
  • Named after: Paul Kruger and the Rand, South Africa's legal tender since 1961
  • Material / fineness: 22 carat, i.e. 916.67/1,000 fine gold; the copper content gives it the typical reddish gold tone and makes the coin more robust
  • Manufacturer: South African Mint – the Krugerrand brand belongs to the renowned Rand Refinery
  • Country of origin: South Africa, home of the Krugerrand since 1967

On 3 July 1967, the South African Mint struck the first gold Krugerrand. Back then, no one suspected that this coin would one day become synonymous with physical gold. Sixty years later, the mint celebrates the anniversary with an issue that will make collectors' hearts beat faster: the 2027 1-ounce Krugerrand in Proof, enhanced with a specially designed privy mark. And with a mintage of just 1,000 pieces.

The Privy Mark: A Small Symbol, a Great Story

Those who look closely will discover it above the springbok's back, directly below the lettering KRUGERRAND. A tiny circle with the number 60, surrounded by the years 1967 and 2027 and the words “Year Anniversary”. Nothing more is needed. This detail transforms the classic into a dated piece of coin history.

Experienced collectors know the principle. Already for the 50th anniversary in 2017, the mint marked selected Krugerrand issues with an anniversary symbol; at that time, the famous 1967 vintage reissue also appeared, limited to 1,967 pieces. It is precisely such commemorative years that count among the most sought-after issues in the entire series. With the 60-year edition, the next circle now closes – and another gap in the collector's album is waiting to be filled.

Proof: The Art of Minting Without Compromise

The bullion Krugerrand is a workhorse. This anniversary coin, by contrast, is a work of art. In Proof quality, the blanks are traditionally hand-fed and struck multiple times with polished dies. The result: dark, mirror-like fields against which the frosted portrait of Paul Kruger and the elegantly leaping springbok stand out in sharp relief. Every strand of beard hair, every muscle of the antelope, the plants in the foreground – everything appears razor-sharp. A quality simply not found in standard strikes.

Connoisseurs will also notice the difference on the edge: Proof Krugerrands traditionally feature 220 edge reeds, while the bullion version has 160. This gold coin is delivered in a high-quality case along with a certificate of authenticity. Our tip: handle the coin only with cotton gloves to permanently preserve its flawless surface.

Anniversary Edition or Standard Krugerrand?

Both have their merits. The bullion Krugerrand is minted in large quantities and is ideally suited for acquiring gold as close to its material value as possible. The Proof variant with privy mark pursues a different goal. Here you acquire more than just the precious metal: the flawless strike, the elegant presentation, and above all the rarity of a one-time year of issue.

That comes at a price, no question – the premium over the pure gold value is naturally higher for collector's issues. In return, you hold in your hands one of only a thousand examples of this rarity. An anniversary that cannot be repeated. It is precisely this limitation that makes the difference.

And compared with other classics? The Maple Leaf or Vienna Philharmonic are made of 999.9 fine gold, which is particularly soft. The Krugerrand, by contrast, has always relied on 22 carat gold. Its copper alloy makes it more resistant to scratches and gives it that warm, reddish shimmer by which it is instantly recognized. Until 1980, incidentally, it accounted for more than 90 percent of the global gold coin market. Since 2017, the series has also been available as silver coins. Gold, however, remains the big brother of little silver – and the anniversary ounce is the crowning piece of any Krugerrand collection.

Gold: The Store of Value That Outlasts Everything

Even in ancient Egypt, gold served as a benchmark for trade. For over 6,000 years it has accompanied humanity as a symbol of wealth, power, and permanence; kings wore it, merchants on the Silk Road paid with it. Gold is the oldest currency in the world and has never had a value of zero, because its intrinsic worth depends on no promise. It does not rust. It does not fade. No wonder central banks are among the largest holders of gold in the world.

For collectors, this means: your passion rests on a foundation of solid precious metal that is recognized worldwide and tradable at any time. Profits from the sale of physical gold in Germany are generally tax-free after a holding period of more than one year. And an anniversary Krugerrand is wonderfully suited to one day pass on to children or grandchildren – as a tangible piece of history that shines from generation to generation.

Sixty years of the Krugerrand, one ounce of gold, a thousand pieces: anyone who adds this anniversary coin to their collection secures a chapter of coin history that will never be repeated.
