From the rock
It had feathers, but also teeth.
It also had broad wings and a long bony tail. The finds come from the limestone quarries near Solnhofen in Bavaria.
No human has ever seen this animal alive: the age of the dinosaurs ended 66 million years ago, and the human genus has existed for about 2.8 million years.

Wir freuen uns, Ihnen die neue Miniserie „Prehistoric Life“ vorstellen zu dürfen. Die sehr große Nachfrage an solchen kleinen Goldmünzen hat das Bayrische Hauptmünzamt veranlasst, diese neue Serie zu produzieren. Insgesamt wird die Serie 12 Münzen umfassen und jährlich werden 3 Ausgaben erscheinen, die sich alle durch ein anderes urzeitliches Motiv auszeichnen.
Die vierte Münze dieser Ausgabe zeigt uns den berühmten Urvogel aus der Gruppe der Archosaurier. Der 1861 erstmals beschriebene rabengroße Vogel lebte in der Zeit der Oberjura (152 – 145 Millionen Jahre). Er besaß bereits den Prototyp eines Federkleides, das wahrscheinlich einen rotbraunen Ton aufwies. Er beherrschte zwar noch nicht den freien Flug, sprang aber von Baum zu Baum auf der Suche nach Insekten, die er mit seinem noch zähnenbesetzten Maul verschlang. Der berühmte Fund aus Deutschland gilt als Bindeglied zwischen Dinosauriern und modernen Vögel, die sich im Laufe der Urzeit fortentwickelten. Nur knapp überlebte die neue Gruppe der Vögel das Massenaussterben am Ende der Kreidezeit.
Auch Millionen von Jahre später sind die Menschen noch immer von den Wesen aus der Urzeit fasziniert, in Museen sind Dinosaurierskelette, vor allem von Kinder das begehrteste Ausstellungsstück. Daher eignet sich diese Serie auch hervorragend als Geschenk für Kinder. Das Design der Münze wurde liebevoll und sehr detailliert gestaltet und zeigt uns auf der Motivseite einen Archaeopteryx mit ausgebreiteten Flügel auf einem Ast sitzend. Ebenfalls auf der Motivseite ist das Ausgabejahr, sowie der Name des Hauptdinosaurier und dessen Lebenszeitraum zu lesen. Am Rand ist der Name der Münzserie aufgeprägt. Die Wertseite zeigt uns das Wappen der Demokratischen Republik Kongo in der Mitte, sowie dem Nennwert, das Gewicht und die Feinheit.
