The name

Why it is called Nugget

The Welcome Stranger was found by the miner John Deason on 5 February 1869 near Moliagul in Victoria, three centimetres deep among the roots of a tree. He hid the find until dark and then dug it out with his partner Richard Oates. In Dunolly the nugget, then the largest known in the world, had to be broken up on an anvil so that it would fit on the bank’s scales, as Museums Victoria reports.

This nugget and three other famous ones appeared on the first years of the series, in designs by Stuart Devlin. It began as The Australian Nugget.

Then came the kangaroo, according to The Perth Mint an icon of Australia that is more easily recognised all over the world. Since 2008 it has listed the bullion coin as the Australian Kangaroo; we still call the series Kangaroo Nugget, after the name under which it began in 1986.

The series

A new kangaroo every year

The gold bullion coins up to one ounce receive a new kangaroo every year. In the early years even the species changed, from the red kangaroo in 1990 to the whiptail wallaby in 1994.

There had been a kangaroo on gold in Australia before. In 1853 Reginald Scaife reached Melbourne aboard the clipper Kangaroo, as manager of a private mint, the Kangaroo Office. With purpose-made dies he struck 27 sets of gold tokens, from a quarter ounce to two ounces, dated 1853.

✔ Ein Känguru-Motiv in höchster Prägequalität 

Die australische Anlagemünze Känguru ist äußerst begehrt. Sie wird von der Prägeanstalt Perth Mint hergestellt. Die Perth Mint entwirft jedes Jahr ein neues Känguru-Motiv. Diese Goldmünze weist ein paar besondere Merkmale auf, die andere Känguru-Goldmünzen nicht haben. Zuerst einmal ist auf der Motivseite das klassische Känguru-Motiv des Jahres 2023 eingeprägt. Ein Riesenkänguru steht im australischen Outback. Es nutzt seinen langen Schwanz als eine Art Stütze. Das Tier schaut nach hinten. Vielleicht wartet es auf andere Kängurus, damit sie gemeinsam unterwegs sein können? Schließlich ist es in Gemeinschaft einfach sicherer und besser. Kängurus sind gerne in einer Herde unterwegs, fühlen sich aber auch allein und ohne Gesellschaft sehr wohl. Im Hintergrund sind verschiedene Bäume, Büsche und Gräser abgebildet. Über einem Busch auf der linken Seite ist ein P eingraviert. Der Buchstabe steht für Perth Mint. Neben dem P stehen das Prägejahr des Produktes (2023) sowie dessen Stückelung (1 Unze) und Feinheit. Die Feinheit beträgt 99,99 Prozent. 

Der Unterschied ist allerdings, dass das Motiv in der höchsten Prägequalität designt wurde, die erreichbar ist: die Polierte Platte. Und das ist auch sehr deutlich zu erkennen. Ebenfalls deutlich zu erkennen und besonders ist das High Relief. Durch das High Relief wirkt das Känguru wirklich wie ein echtes Tier, das vor einem steht. Einfach unheimlich realistisch! Obendrauf ist die Goldmünze auch limitiert. Auf 200 Stück weltweit. Es handelt sich also um eine Sammlermünze und nicht um eine Anlagemünze, wie bei den meisten Känguru-Goldmünzen. 

✔ Queen Elizabeth II. und Australien 

Queen Elizabeth II. wurde im Jahr 1952 zur Königin gekrönt, nachdem ihr Vater King George VI. gestorben war. Sie regierte über 70 Jahre lang. Sie war auch das Staatsoberhaupt von Ländern wie Kanada und Australien. Sie starb am 8. September 2022 im Balmoral Castle in Schottland. Das Schloss war eines ihrer vielen Anwesen. Ihr Bildnis ist auf der Wertseite der Münze zu sehen. Genauso wie der Nennwert von 100 australischen Dollar.
