The design
Stuart Devlin’s red kangaroo
In 2014 The Perth Mint celebrated 25 years of Stuart Devlin’s red kangaroo, which began in 1989 with the proof issue. The design shows it in mid-leap, ringed by stylised rays of sunlight, with the mark P25 and the years 1989 to 2014.

The name
Why it is called Nugget
The Welcome Stranger was found by the miner John Deason on 5 February 1869 near Moliagul in Victoria, three centimetres deep among the roots of a tree. He hid the find until dark and then dug it out with his partner Richard Oates. In Dunolly the nugget, then the largest known in the world, had to be broken up on an anvil so that it would fit on the bank’s scales, as Museums Victoria reports.
This nugget and three other famous ones appeared on the first years of the series, in designs by Stuart Devlin. It began as The Australian Nugget.
Then came the kangaroo, according to The Perth Mint an icon of Australia that is more easily recognised all over the world. Since 2008 it has listed the bullion coin as the Australian Kangaroo; we still call the series Kangaroo Nugget, after the name under which it began in 1986.

The series
A new kangaroo every year
The gold bullion coins up to one ounce receive a new kangaroo every year. In the early years even the species changed, from the red kangaroo in 1990 to the whiptail wallaby in 1994.
There had been a kangaroo on gold in Australia before. In 1853 Reginald Scaife reached Melbourne aboard the clipper Kangaroo, as manager of a private mint, the Kangaroo Office. With purpose-made dies he struck 27 sets of gold tokens, from a quarter ounce to two ounces, dated 1853.
