High above the half-timbered rooftops of the "colourful town in the Harz" stands a castle that looks as though it has sprung straight from a fairytale book. On this coin, you get to experience it the way one usually only sees it with a bit of luck: on a clear night, windows glowing warmly, with a sky full of stars above. This 1-ounce coin from the "Cities and Landscapes" series ranks among those silver coins that you simply don't put away. You keep looking at it. Again and again.

✔ One castle, two views

The obverse shows the castle with its mighty, battlement-crowned main tower, pointed roofs and half-timbered wing, where every window seems to glow golden. Below, dark coniferous forest spreads out, to the left the lights of the town in the valley sparkle, and on the horizon the ridges of the Harz mountains stand out against a fiery sunset. Above: deep night blue, a glowing full moon and the Milky Way stretching across the sky in violet and magenta. At the bottom edge is the inscription "1 OZ 9999 FINE SILVER 2026".

Turning the coin over, you are not greeted by a sober state emblem, but by a second perspective on the building. This time, the long façade with its rows of windows and the round corner tower takes centre stage, with a greenish shimmering tower roof adding a subtle accent. Along the right-hand edge runs the face value "20 DOLLARS", and below, small, is the coat of arms of the issuing country, Liberia. This fits remarkably well with the original: the castle's architecture is designed so that walking around it reveals a new silhouette roughly every 45 degrees.

✔ From medieval castle to landmark building of Historicism

As early as the beginning of the 12th century, a first fortress was built above Wernigerode to secure the German emperors' route to their hunting grounds in the Harz. Extensions followed in the Late Gothic style, a conversion into a Renaissance fortress, and after the devastation of the Thirty Years' War, a Baroque residential palace. The building received its present-day appearance between 1862 and 1885. Count Otto zu Stolberg-Wernigerode, later Bismarck's deputy as vice-chancellor, had it redesigned by the architect Carl Frühling. The result is regarded as a landmark building of North German Historicism. Since 1999, the castle, along with its garden and park grounds, has been recognised as a nationally significant cultural monument and is one of the best-known sights in Saxony-Anhalt.

✔ Finishing you can see and feel

This silver coin owes its special character to a specialised workshop in Germany that finishes it exclusively for Kettner Edelmetalle. With great precision, the design is applied in colour so that the starry sky, moonlight and illuminated windows shine in rich tones. In addition, there is partial gilding: the reeded edge and the inscriptions gleam in warm gold, framing the nocturnal scene like a precious picture frame. Coloured and partially gilded, in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, the piece is delivered securely in a capsule. The manufacturer refers to the coin, not the finishing.

✔ Why just 100 pieces make such a difference

Classic bullion coins such as the Maple Leaf, the Britannia or the Somalia Elephant are minted in large quantities. Their strength lies in their closeness to the pure material value, and their design remains largely unchanged over the years. A coloured, partially gilded coin with a mintage of only 100 pieces plays in an entirely different league. Here, rarity, design and craftsmanship are what count. The price is naturally above the pure silver value – but in return, you receive a small work of art that hardly any other collector owns. The strict limitation makes every piece a true collector's item, and German landmarks in particular attract great interest among collectors both at home and abroad. Anyone who already owns "Berlin by Night – Brandenburg Gate" from the same series will find an atmospheric counterpart here.

✔ Silver: A metal with a great history

Silver has been minted into coins for thousands of years, and in many cultures it was regarded as a sign of prosperity and prestige. It is long-lasting, retains its properties across generations and carries an intrinsic value, since electronics, solar and medical technology all depend on this precious metal. Some buyers additionally see it as a building block for their inflation hedge or their crisis protection. With this coin, however, the joy of collecting is clearly at the centre. A pleasant side effect: under current law, profits from the sale of silver are tax-free for private individuals, provided the holding period is at least one year.
