✔ A landmark of Saxony-Anhalt by moonlight

The collegiate church, popularly known as Quedlinburg Cathedral, is one of the most significant buildings of High Romanesque architecture in Germany. The three-aisled basilica was largely built between 1070 and 1129, with its solemn consecration taking place in 1129. Yet the historical significance of this site reaches back even further. King Henry I found his final resting place here in 936. His widow Matilda founded a convent for canonesses on the castle hill, which would endure for nearly 900 years. To this day, visitors can view the graves of the royal couple, and the famous cathedral treasury, including the Samuhel Gospels, is one of the most precious ensembles of medieval treasury art. Since 1994, the collegiate church, castle, and old town together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the northern edge of the Harz mountains.

The coin captures this grandeur. On one side, the two striking church towers rise above the half-timbered gables of the castle, their windows glowing golden in the twilight. The other side looks up from the red tiled roofs of the old town to the sandstone cliff. Above it all? The full moon, the violet-sparkling Milky Way, and a horizon ablaze in glowing orange. Few designs in the "Cities and Landscapes" series are as atmospheric as this one.

✔ Color meets gold: the finishing in detail

The base is an official coin from Liberia with a face value of 20 dollars in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition. It is then refined in Germany by a specialized partner company exclusively for Kettner Edelmetalle. The full-surface colorization brings the night sky, walls, and rooftops to life. The rim, ring, and inscriptions are partially gilded, framing the image like a fine border. Even the Liberian state emblem blends discreetly into the nocturnal scene. Each individual coin undergoes several production steps, carried out with the utmost precision.

A mintage of just 100 pieces means: whoever acquires one today owns one of only a hundred examples – and therefore a true rarity.

✔ Collector's item or bullion classic?

Those focused solely on metal value turn to bullion coins such as the Maple Leaf or the Vienna Philharmonic. However, these are minted in the millions. Even many colorized silver coins are issued with mintages in the thousands. This edition plays in a completely different league. Of course, its price exceeds the pure silver value – which is entirely normal for refined collector's items. In return, you receive art, history, and a very low mintage all in one single object.

The foundation, however, remains solid. Silver has served as a coinage metal and store of value for thousands of years; it is durable, globally tradable, and in high demand in electronics, solar, and medical technology. For many people, the white metal is also a building block for inflation hedging and crisis protection. With this coin, however, the passion for collecting is clearly at the forefront. Good to know: in Germany, profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.
