A century of modernism on 40 millimetres. On 4 December 1926, the new Bauhaus school building was ceremoniously opened in Dessau. It was designed by Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius after the school had relocated from Weimar to the Anhalt town. What began then as a bold experiment in steel, glass and concrete is now regarded worldwide as the epitome of "white modernism" and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Right in time for the anniversary year 2026, the "Cities and Landscapes" series dedicates a special edition to what is probably Saxony-Anhalt's most famous building. And it is anything but ordinary.

Today, the building in Dessau-Roßlau houses the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, which is celebrating the milestone anniversary under the title "Bauhaus Dessau 100". Together with the nearby Masters' Houses and the Bauhaus Museum Dessau, the ensemble attracts architecture enthusiasts from all over the world – and now coin collectors too.

✔ Icon of Architecture: The Design in Detail

On one side rises the famous workshop wing with its glass façade suspended in front of the load-bearing frame. Golden light glimmers behind the windows, while the legendary BAUHAUS lettering stands prominently on the end façade. Above it stretches a deep blue night sky, streaked by the violet shimmer of the Milky Way, while a fiery red afterglow still lingers on the horizon. A full moon, damp pathways reflecting the light: it's hard to believe how much atmosphere fits onto one ounce. At the bottom edge is the inscription "1 OZ 9999 FINE SILVER 2026".

The other side puts the Atelierhaus, also known as the Prellerhaus, at the centre. Its distinctive small balconies are among the most photographed details of the Bauhaus Dessau; this is where the students once lived. To the left adjoins the flat, generously glazed connecting wing. The face value "20 DOLLARS" and the coat of arms of the issuing country, Liberia, complete this side.

✔ Elaborate Finishing from Germany

What makes this coin so special is its subsequent finishing by a specialised partner company in Germany. With great precision, the colourful designs are applied to both sides, after which the rim is partially gilded. The golden ring frames the nocturnal scenes like an elegant picture frame, making the colours shine even more intensely. The manufacturer's designation refers to the coin itself, not to the finishing.

✔ Why 100 Pieces Make the Difference

Classic silver coins such as the Maple Leaf or the Vienna Philharmonic are minted in the millions year after year. Their value is based primarily on the metal price – ideal for anyone focused purely on the material. This edition plays in a different league. With a mintage of only 100 pieces, it is a true rarity that rarely appears on the collector's market.

Certainly, for such a very low mintage, you pay more than for a standard ounce. In return, you get rarity, artistic design, and a story worth telling. It is precisely this consistent limitation that underpins the potential for value appreciation that connoisseurs value in such pieces.

✔ Silver: A Noble Foundation with a Long History

Silver has accompanied humanity for thousands of years as a monetary and coinage metal and was regarded in many cultures as a symbol of prosperity and prestige. It is durable, retains its physical properties over generations, and possesses an intrinsic value supported by high demand in electronics, solar technology and medical technology. Many investors value the white metal as an inflation hedge or as a building block for their crisis protection. With this coin, however, the joy of collecting is clearly in the foreground. Good to know: in Germany, profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.
