The anniversary mark

Above the springbok’s back: 60 years of the Krugerrand.

For the anniversary, the Krugerrand 2027 carries a round mark. It sits above the springbok’s back, to the left of its head and horns.

The portrait side

A portrait from 1892: Paul Kruger on the Krugerrand 2027.

Paul Kruger in profile, framed by SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. The likeness was crafted by the die engraver Otto Schultz, and according to the South African Mint it is struck from the original die of the 1892 Kruger half crown. The name Krugerrand joins Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency. The rand also recalls the Witwatersrand, the “ridge of white water”.

1892 to 2027

From 3 July 1967 to 2027: 60 years of the Krugerrand.

  1. 1892

The die engraver Otto Schultz creates Paul Kruger’s profile for the half crown of 1892.

  2. 1947

Coert Steynberg’s prancing springbok first appears on the 5 shilling coin for the visit of the British royal family.

  3. 1967

On 3 July the South African Mint strikes the first Krugerrand: 1 oz of fine gold, struck on the press “Oom Paul”.

  4. 1980

The 1/2, the 1/4 and the 1/10 oz join the range.

  5. 2017

  6. 2024

The Piedfort joins the range: 2 oz of gold at the diameter of the 1 oz.

  7. 2027

The anniversary editions: 1967•2027 with a large 60 on gold, 2017•2027 with a large 10 on silver.

60 Years of the Krugerrand: Seven Treasures in an Anniversary Case

  • Special feature: Anniversary set of the world's most popular bullion coin made of gold – enhanced with the 60-year privy mark
  • Minting quality: Mirror finish to perfection – the highest grade Proof (PP)
  • Set contents: 7 coins from 2 ounces to 1/50 ounce, totalling 121.93 g fine gold
  • Limitation: Mintage of just 50 sets
  • Investment goal: inflation hedge, value preservation and crisis protection in its finest form
  • Design: Paul Kruger, President of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1902, on the obverse, the leaping springbok on the reverse – unchanged since 1967
  • Named after: Paul Kruger and the Rand, South Africa's legal tender since 1961
  • Material / fineness: 22 karat gold (916.67/1,000), the remainder is copper. This gives it its characteristic red-gold shimmer and a particularly robust surface
  • Manufacturer: South African Mint, South Africa's state mint
  • Country of origin: South Africa, home of the Krugerrand since 1967

On 3 July 1967, the first Krugerrand left the minting press. Sixty years later, the South African Mint is celebrating its global star with a set that could hardly be more exclusive: seven gold coins from the anniversary year, issued in just 50 pieces. Anyone who loves the Gold Krugerrand will find here the most complete form in which to own this legend. This ranges from the mighty 2-ounce coin to the tiny 1/50-ounce piece, all in flawless proof quality.

What's inside the 7-Coin Prestige Set 2027

This Krugerrand Prestige Set combines all denominations in a single case. Together they add up to 3.92 ounces or 121.93 grams of fine gold, with a gross weight of 133.01 grams:

  1. 2 ounces gold (approx. 62.21 g fine gold)
  2. 1 ounce gold (approx. 31.10 g fine gold)
  3. 1/2 ounce gold (approx. 15.55 g fine gold)
  4. 1/4 ounce gold (approx. 7.78 g fine gold)
  5. 1/10 ounce gold (approx. 3.11 g fine gold)
  6. 1/20 ounce gold (approx. 1.56 g fine gold)
  7. 1/50 ounce gold (approx. 0.62 g fine gold)

A special appeal for collectors: the two smallest formats are not part of the classic investment range of 1, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/10 ounce. It is precisely these tiny coins that make the limited set something special.

The Privy Mark: A Small Symbol with Great Meaning

On each coin, to the left of the springbok's head, sits a circular anniversary mark. It features the number 60, the years 1967 and 2027, and the inscription "Year Anniversary". With this, the South African Mint continues a tradition begun in 2017, when it celebrated the 50th anniversary with a similar privy mark. Such mint marks capture a historic moment. That is precisely why they are so sought after by collectors.

A Design That Has Stood the Test of Generations

The obverse features the portrait of Paul Kruger, who led the South African Republic as president from 1883 to 1902. On the reverse, the springbok, South Africa's national animal, leaps across its native landscape. The design was created by sculptor Coert Steynberg, whose initials "CLS" appear discreetly in the coin's field. There is also the bilingual inscription "Fyngoud – Fine Gold". Nothing has changed about this design since the very first year of issue, and that is intentional: hardly any gold coin in the world is recognised so quickly.

Proof: A Mirror Finish That Captivates

Coins of the highest minting quality, Proof, often also called mirror finish, are produced using polished dies and multiple striking processes. The result is simply impressive. Mirrored surfaces and frosted reliefs alternate, every detail of the springbok stands out in relief, and the gold appears deeper and more three-dimensional than a standard strike could ever achieve. This effort comes at a price, as Proof coins cost more than standard-strike pieces. In return, you get a set that delights anew every time the case is opened.

Each coin is housed in its own coin capsule, protecting its flawless surface. The set is delivered in a large wooden case. It keeps the coins safe while also providing them with a stylish setting. A certificate of authenticity is also included.

Legal Tender Without a Face Value

Under South African Reserve Bank regulations, the Krugerrand is official legal tender throughout South Africa. Unlike most coins, however, it bears no stamped face value. Its equivalent value is set anew by the official authority on every business day, based on the market price of the gold it contains. The coin's value is therefore directly tied to the metal.

Krugerrand or 24-Karat Coin?

Fine gold bullion coins such as the Maple Leaf or Vienna Philharmonic are made of 999.9/1,000 gold, whereas the Krugerrand is made of 22 karat gold. The copper content makes it harder and less prone to scratches, which is especially helpful for the smaller denominations. Nevertheless, it still contains just as much fine gold, since the gross weight is correspondingly higher. Those who like the warm, reddish gold tone will particularly appreciate it, while fine gold coins shine in a brighter yellow. In the end, personal taste is what matters most here.

Gold: The World's Oldest Currency

Gold has preserved value for over 6,000 years. Even in ancient Egypt, it served as a unit of measure in trade, and kings and emperors wore it as a symbol of their power. Paper currencies have come and gone, but gold has remained. It has intrinsic value, has never fallen to zero, and is accepted as a medium of exchange all over the world. It is not without reason that it is often referred to as "God's money". Among precious metals, it is the big brother of its smaller sibling, silver.

Central banks are among the largest gold holders in the world. Fiat money can be printed at will, whereas the amount of gold is limited.

For buyers in Germany, there are also clear tax advantages. Investment gold is exempt from VAT, and anyone who holds it for at least one year can generally take profits from its sale tax-free. Gold has proven itself over centuries against loss of purchasing power, currency risks, and political crises. A set like this one can also be passed down as a family heirloom to the next generation.

An Anniversary Piece for Connoisseurs

The Krugerrand Prestige Set 2027 brings together everything collectors look for: a historic occasion, a very small mintage, all denominations in a single set, and the highest minting quality. At the same time, it contains genuine gold with lasting material value. Anyone wishing to purchase a special piece to mark the 60th anniversary of the world's best-known bullion coin will hardly find a more beautiful choice.
