Australian Emu 2026 in Colour – the Outback Rarity from the Perth Mint

  • Strictly limited: only 2,500 pieces of this coloured edition worldwide
  • Growth potential: very high value appreciation potential thanks to strict limitation and strong demand from the collector community
  • Rare and sought-after: a true rarity for lovers of Australian animal designs
  • Design: a running Emu in the Outback beneath a cloudy sky in shades of blue and violet, accompanied by a farm shed and windmill
  • Manufacturer: The Perth Mint, Australia's historic mint
  • Country of origin: Australia

Some coins are bought because they are beautiful. Others because they are rare. This edition combines both. As a colour-finished collector's coin from the Perth Mint, the Australian Emu 2026 is issued with a mintage of just 2,500 pieces worldwide. This makes it one of the particularly exclusive silver coins of the year. It is struck from one troy ounce of silver with a fineness of 999.9/1,000, in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) quality, and carries the legal face value of 1 Australian Dollar.

The Design: An Emu Running Through the Outback

What immediately catches the eye is the colour. The reverse shows a fully grown Emu striding with wide steps through the Australian Outback. Above it stretches a cloudy sky in delicate shades of blue and violet, interwoven with warmly glowing clouds. In the background stand a farm shed and a classic windmill – symbols of rural Australia. The low grasses and rocky terrain, by contrast, are rendered in finely textured, uncoloured relief. It is precisely this contrast between the coloured scene and the gleaming metal that creates the special appeal.

Arched across the top is the inscription "AUSTRALIAN EMU", and below "2026 1oz 9999 SILVER". On the right is the "P" mint mark of the Perth Mint. The design was created by Jennifer McKenna, whose initials "JM" are discreetly placed within the design.

The obverse bears the portrait of King Charles III, designed by Dan Thorne, along with the inscriptions "CHARLES III", "AUSTRALIA" and "1 DOLLAR".

Australia's Heraldic Bird

The Emu is native to Australia and the largest living bird on the continent. It cannot fly, as its wings are far too small for that. Instead, its long, powerful legs carry it across the land at speeds of up to 50 km/h. A special characteristic: among Emus, it is the male that incubates the eggs. For around two months, he guards the clutch and barely leaves the nest – not even for food or water. It's no wonder, then, that Emus adorn Australia's coat of arms alongside the Kangaroo.

Why the Limitation Makes the Difference

The Perth Mint's Emu series has accompanied collectors since 2018. The regular, uncoloured silver issue for 2026 is limited to 30,000 pieces. The coloured version, with its very low mintage, is therefore twelve times rarer. And interest is strong: another coloured Emu variant from the 2026 year of issue – an Emu with five chicks against a desert backdrop – has already sold out at the mint.

This is precisely where the strength of this rarity lies. Once the limited mintage is reached, no further coins will be struck. Anyone wishing to acquire one later will have to rely on the collector market. Many collectors see in this combination of design, colour and scarcity a very high value appreciation potential.

In Comparison: Emu, Kangaroo, Kookaburra and More

  • Bullion classics such as the Kangaroo or Kookaburra: lower premium and ideal for stacking, but available in significantly higher mintages
  • Animal designs such as the Wedge-Tailed Eagle 2026: also popular, but with noticeably larger mintages
  • Australian Emu 2026 in Colour: higher premium, but only 2,500 pieces, elaborate colour finishing and a distinctive design

A note on care: coloured surfaces are more delicate than plain metal. It is therefore best to keep the coin in its original packaging, a case with a clear lid. According to the Perth Mint, a numbered certificate of authenticity is included.

Silver – Collecting Pleasure with Intrinsic Value

Silver has been a coinage metal, trading medium and symbol of wealth for thousands of years. Unlike paper money, it carries intrinsic value, underpinned by its physical properties and growing industrial demand from electronics, solar and medical technology. For many, this precious metal is also a building block for inflation hedging or crisis protection. With this coin, however, the passion for collecting clearly takes centre stage.

Another advantage for private individuals in Germany: profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free after a minimum holding period of one year. Silver is also durable and retains its properties over generations. This quickly turns the Emu into an heirloom with a story – one that can wonderfully be passed on to children or grandchildren.
