Victoria Above the Highland Valley: The Design in Detail

On the obverse, the winged goddess of victory, Victoria, soars above a column. The model is the statue of the Ángel de la Independencia in Mexico City, the monument to Mexican independence. In her right hand she holds a laurel wreath, in her left a broken chain. In the background rise the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, framed by agave and prickly pear cactus. Added to this are the inscriptions "PLATA PURA", "1/4 ONZA" and "2026 LEY .999", as well as the Mo mint mark of the Mexico City mint.

The reverse shows the modern national coat of arms: the eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its beak, surrounded by the inscription "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS". Arranged around it are historical eagle depictions that Mexico has used as a national emblem throughout the centuries. A small history lesson in metal.

A Series with Tradition and Low Mintages

Mexico is one of the world's most significant silver-producing countries. Since 1982, the Casa de Moneda de México has issued a silver bullion coin, making the Mexico Libertad one of the oldest silver bullion coins in existence. Notably, it lacks a stamped face value. Its value derives solely from the metal content and from collector interest.

This very interest has grown considerably in recent years. The mintages of the Libertad have always been far below those of major bullion programs. For the 2025 year of issue, the Banco de México reported historically low minting figures — for the quarter-ounce Brilliant Uncirculated coin, there were only 100 pieces. Official figures for 2026 are not yet available. Collectors wishing to keep their yearly series complete will nevertheless be watching closely.

Why Silver? Wealth Preservation You Can Hold in Your Hand

Silver has accompanied humanity for thousands of years as a monetary metal and symbol of prosperity. Paper money relies solely on trust in governments. The white metal, by contrast, possesses intrinsic value: it is limited in availability, durable, and in demand worldwide, for example in electronics, photovoltaic systems, and medical technology. New technologies are further boosting this industrial demand.

For many investors, physical silver coins are therefore a core component of crisis protection, particularly in times of political and economic uncertainty. Compared to gold, silver is more affordable, highly liquid, and can be sold worldwide. Another advantage in Germany: profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free after a minimum holding period of one year.

Quarter Ounce, Full Ounce, or Proof: Which Suits You?

The full ounce is the classic, no question. The 1/4 oz, on the other hand, scores points for flexibility. It can be sold off in small units as needed and is well suited as a means of exchange for smaller amounts, as a gift, or as an entry point into the series. Naturally, the premium per gram is somewhat higher for smaller denominations. In return, you receive a silver bullion coin in a fractional size that only a few mints offer: Maple Leaf and Vienna Philharmonic are predominantly available in silver only as full ounces. For those who prefer something even more refined, the Proof version is the way to go. For investors, the Brilliant Uncirculated version remains the top choice.

The 1/4 oz Libertad 2026 combines Mexican history, 999 fine silver, and genuine collector appeal in a format that fits in any hand.

This way, you can add a piece of Mexico to your collection or your wealth reserve — and a coin that can easily be preserved for the next generation.
