The original

The Mark was part of daily life. The memory remains.

The 1-DM coin entered circulation in 1950, designed by Josef Bernhart. This 2026 coin takes up its design once more. It is not an issue of the Federal Republic of Germany or the Deutsche Bundesbank.

1/20 oz Deutsche Mark 2026: Cult Design in Reverse Proof, Strictly Limited to 1,500 Pieces

  • Strictly limited: The mintage is firmly capped. Only 1,500 pieces of this edition will be produced worldwide.
  • Growth potential: A scarce mintage meets unbroken demand for D-Mark designs. This creates significant appreciation potential.
  • Rarity: An exceptionally rare collector's coin that should not be missing from any collection of German monetary history.
  • Investment goal: A pure collector's item whose appeal stems from a cult design, exquisite minting quality, and a minimal mintage.
  • Design: The large denomination number "1" between two oak branches with acorns, below it "DEUTSCHE MARK" and the year of issue 2026. On the reverse, a majestic eagle spreads its wings.
  • Material / fineness: Pure gold with a fineness of 999.9/1,000, 1.56 g fine weight, 16.50 mm diameter.
  • Minting quality: Reverse Proof, meaning a mirror-polished relief on a silky matte background.
  • Manufacturer: An exclusive edition by Kettner Edelmetalle.
  • Country of origin: Germany. The coin is issued as official legal tender of the Republic of Liberia.

Almost everyone has held certain coins in their hand at some point. The 1 Deutsche Mark is one of them. For over half a century it jingled in German wallets, and to this day its sight evokes memories of the economic miracle, pocket money, and the first ice cream cone bought with your own money. Kettner Edelmetalle brings this cult design back in 2026: in pure fine gold, in an exquisite Reverse Proof finish, and with a mintage of only 1,500 pieces. Among the current gold coins in the German Eagle series, the 1/20 oz is the most charming entry point into this piece of monetary history.

Oak Leaves and Eagle: The Design in Detail

At the center of the value side sits the large digit "1". It is framed on both sides by two oak branches, each with a sculpted acorn. The oak leaves symbolize permanence and strength and are rendered in fine detail down to the leaf veins. Below follow the inscription "DEUTSCHE MARK" and the year of minting 2026. A fine beaded border encloses the entire composition.

The reverse belongs to the eagle. An open beak, layered plumage, a diamond-textured breast, and powerfully spread talons give it an impressive presence. At its feet sits the discreetly placed coat of arms of Liberia, while the wings bear the face value and the inscription "Republic of Liberia". The upper legend states the denomination and fine gold content, while the lower legend repeats "DEUTSCHE MARK". A reeded edge completes the coin.

The historical model was created by the Munich sculptor Josef Bernhart. His 1-DM coin featuring oak leaves and the federal eagle was in circulation starting in 1950. It remained legal tender until the euro replaced the Mark on January 1, 2002. Hardly any other coin accompanied the Federal Republic of Germany for so long.

Reverse Proof: Shine Exactly Where It Belongs

In the classic Proof finish, the background is mirrored while the design remains matte. Reverse Proof reverses this principle. The eagle, oak leaves, and lettering gleam with a mirror finish, while the background appears silky matte. This makes the relief visually stand out from the surface, with every feather and every acorn catching the light. Because this technique is elaborate, it is usually reserved for small, limited series. The coin is delivered securely in a case. It is best to handle it only by the edge so that the delicate surface remains flawless.

Why 1,500 Pieces Make the Difference

In the collector's market, mintage decides almost everything. 1,500 coins for the entire global market represent a very low mintage for a design recognized by millions of people. Such minimal mintages, as experience shows, tend to end up in permanent collections. After that, they rarely resurface.

  • Double substance: Collector value is secured by the strict limitation, in addition to the material value of pure fine gold.
  • VAT-free: As investment gold, you purchase the coin without VAT.
  • Tax-attractive: Anyone wishing to sell gold after a holding period of at least one year generally remains tax-free on the profit.
  • Emotional value: The coin is ideal as a gift for births, christenings, anniversaries, or retirement, especially for anyone who personally experienced the D-Mark era.
  • Compact format: 16.50 mm diameter and 1.56 g gross weight. Small, but with a big impact.

Comparison: The Deutsche Mark 2026 and Its Siblings

The design appears in several variants in 2026. The full ounce in Reverse Proof is limited to just 50 pieces. There is also a Fractional Set with 1/10, 1/20, and 1/50 oz, as well as further small denominations and silver editions. Anyone seeking the maximum weight in a single piece should choose the ounce. The 1/20 oz, on the other hand, offers a significantly lower entry point into the same design world.

And how does it compare to a classic bullion coin like the 1/20 oz Maple Leaf? The Canadian bullion classic is minted annually in large quantities. Like gold bars, it is aimed at everyone who buys precious metal primarily by weight. The Deutsche Mark 2026 pursues a different goal. Here, design, minting artistry, and rarity take center stage, and the premium reflects exactly this collector's value. If you are looking for a tangible piece of history, this edition is an excellent choice.

Gold: Humanity's Oldest Currency

For over 6,000 years, gold has served as a store of value. Even in ancient Egypt it was a unit of measure for trade. Later it moved goods along the Silk Road, and in the 19th and 20th centuries it formed the backbone of entire currency systems through the gold standard. The precious metal possesses intrinsic value, has never been worth zero, and is tradable worldwide. It is no coincidence that central banks hold the largest gold reserves in the world. Incidentally, physical precious metal also serves as an inflation hedge and as crisis protection. With this edition, however, the joy of collecting is clearly the main focus.

Gold is God's money. It has been shining for thousands of years and will never lose its shine.

A legendary design, exquisite Reverse Proof quality, pure fine gold, and a genuine rarity: The 1/20 oz Deutsche Mark 2026 combines everything that makes collectors' hearts beat faster. Secure your piece before the 1,500 coins disappear into permanent collections.
