Krugerrand Icons Set: The Springbok Across Two Eras – Limited to 99 Sets

  • Strictly limited: Only 99 pieces of this Icons Set will ever be produced worldwide – after that, the edition is closed for good.
  • Growth potential: A tight mintage meets a large, loyal community of Krugerrand collectors – giving rise to very high appreciation potential.
  • Rarity: Each collector's coin in this case tells its own chapter of Springbok history – together, a true rarity as an ensemble.
  • Investment goal: A rare collector's item that, thanks to its strict limitation, carries high appreciation potential.
  • Design: Coert Steynberg's leaping Springbok – once in the historic original from 1948/49 featuring the portrait of King George VI, and once on the modern Krugerrand with the Willy Brandt privy mark between the digits 19 and 90.
  • Material / fineness: The Krugerrand is made of a full troy ounce of silver with 999/1000 fineness, while the 5-shilling coin is made of traditional 800 silver with around 22.6 g of fine silver.
  • Manufacturer: South African Mint – South Africa's state mint, whose Pretoria era also produced the historic 5-shilling coin.
  • Country of origin: Germany – as an exclusively assembled set edition.

Two coins. One animal. Almost eight decades in between. The Krugerrand Icons Set brings together what belongs together: the Springbok as it first leapt across South Africa's large silver crowns after the Second World War, and its modern descendant in flawless Proof quality. For collectors who want not only to own coins, but also to understand their history, this combination is a rare stroke of luck.

What's Included: The Contents of This Set

  • 1x 5 Shillings South Africa 1948–1949 – the legendary Springbok of the Krugerrand, obverse featuring the portrait of George VI.
  • 1x 1 ounce Silver Krugerrand Willy Brandt Privy Mark 2026 Proof (Proof quality, individual mintage of 2,500 pieces)
  • 1x premium Krugerrand case for two coins

The Original Springbok: 5 Shillings 1948–1949

Without this coin, the Krugerrand as we know it would not exist. Sculptor Coert Laurens Steynberg designed the leaping Springbok for the South African 5-shilling coin, which was first issued in 1947 – his initials "CLS" still appear to this day below the animal on the right. When South Africa introduced the Krugerrand in 1967, it drew directly on this well-known design. The obverse depicts King George VI, after a design by Thomas Humphrey Paget. With a gross weight of 28.28 g and a diameter of 38.61 mm, the crown is almost exactly the same size as its modern successor. The 1948 and 1949 issues date from the era of the Union of South Africa and were minted in Pretoria – numismatics you can hold in your hand.

The Successor: 1 Ounce Silver Krugerrand Willy Brandt Privy Mark 2026

On the reverse, the same Springbok, now in a mirror-like Proof finish, above it the inscription KRUGERRAND and the lettering "FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER R1". The special detail sits tiny above the animal's back: a miniature portrait of Willy Brandt, framed by the digits 19 and 90. The privy mark commemorates 1990 – the year Nelson Mandela was released, Brandt received him in Bonn, and Germany was reunited.

The obverse carries, as usual, the image of Paul Kruger. With 31.1 g of fine silver, a diameter of 38.725 mm, and a face value of 1 Rand, this Krugerrand silver coin is a collector's item of special standing. German motifs on the Krugerrand are, after all, a rare exception within the series.

The Springbok of 1948/49 and the Springbok of 2026 – the same design, two eras, united in one case. It is precisely this narrative that makes the Icons Set so unique.

Why 99 Sets Will Make Collectors' Hearts Beat Faster

Even the single coin with the Willy Brandt privy mark is limited to 2,500 pieces. The Icons Set goes a decisive step further: with a mintage of just 99 pieces, it is a true rarity that only a very small circle of collectors worldwide will ever own. Such a very low mintage will not be increased afterwards. Once sold out, it stays sold out – the edition is strictly limited.

Adding to this is the brand's appeal. The Krugerrand is regarded as the very first modern bullion coin and has been a household name among collectors worldwide since 1967. Since its 50th anniversary in 2017, it has also been issued in silver – and special editions with privy marks have since become among the most sought-after silver coins from South Africa.

Icons Set, Single Coin, or Standard Krugerrand?

Those who primarily collect gold usually know the Krugerrand from the world of classic gold coins. The silver editions open up a different approach – and within that, there are clear distinctions:

  • Standard silver Krugerrand: A bullion coin in Brilliant Uncirculated quality, minted on an ongoing basis, priced close to metal value – ideal for stacking, but without any rarity factor.
  • Single coin Willy Brandt Proof: Limited to 2,500 pieces, Proof quality, an attractive privy mark – a great entry point into Krugerrand collecting.
  • Icons Set: The same privy coin plus the historic original from 1948/49, united in a case and limited to 99 sets – the most definitive choice for collectors with a sense for history.

The price of such a set naturally exceeds the pure silver value. This collector's premium is paid for rarity, minting quality, and history – not for weight. Incidentally, precious metal here remains physically tangible as well, which many buyers also appreciate as a small building block for inflation hedging and crisis protection. However, the clear focus remains the joy of collecting.

Storage Tip

Coins in Proof quality do not forgive fingerprints. It's therefore best to handle the Krugerrand only by its edge while wearing cotton gloves, and to keep both coins in the included case. This way, the mirror finish will remain intact for decades to come – and your Icons Set will look just as impressive years from now as it did on day one.
