1/10 oz Britannia 2027: The Anniversary in Miniature Format

  • Investment goal: Bullion coin for inflation hedge and wealth preservation. As a denomination below the 1/4 ounce, it is ideal for small-scale crisis protection
  • Design: Lady Britannia with Corinthian helmet, shield and trident, symbol of the British people
  • Material & fineness: 3.11 g pure silver, fineness 999/1,000
  • Manufacturer: minted by the renowned The British Royal Mint
  • Origin: United Kingdom

Small, but remarkable: the silver Britannia in a tenth-ounce format is the smallest silver coin in the 2027 Britannia family. And it marks an anniversary too. In 1997, the Royal Mint released its first silver Britannia. Thirty years later, the series is receiving design features unique to this year of issue. Anyone looking to collect silver coins flexibly and in small steps will find a particularly charming entry point here.

What makes the 2027 year of issue so special

At first glance, everything looks familiar. Only on closer inspection do the details stand out: a wave-shaped mint mark with the number "30" adorns the obverse, and the finely structured background texture also picks up on the anniversary number. According to the Royal Mint, both features are exclusive to the 2027 year of issue.

Another first: according to the mint, the 2027 tenth-ounce silver coin is the first of its kind to feature all four visual security features of the Britannia bullion coins. At a diameter of just 16.50 mm, this is a remarkable achievement in minting technology.

Four security features in the smallest of spaces

  • Latent image: Depending on the viewing angle, the symbol in the round field switches between a padlock and a trident.
  • Micro-text: The motto "DECUS ET TUTAMEN" runs in tiny lettering around the design.
  • Tincture lines: The Union Flag on the shield is designed with heraldic colour lines.
  • Surface animation: The background pattern appears to move when the coin is tilted.

Obverse and reverse in detail

The obverse shows Philip Nathan's famous depiction of Lady Britannia, which he created in 1987 for the first gold Britannia. With flowing robes, she strides forward, the Corinthian helmet on her head and the trident raised in her hand. The shield represents protection, the olive branch represents peace, and the trident represents the nation's close connection with the sea. The inscription "BRITANNIA 2027 1/10 OZ 999 FINE SILVER" runs around the edge.

On the reverse, King Charles III looks to the left. The official coin portrait is by sculptor Martin Jennings, whose initials "MJ" can be seen beneath the neckline. The inscription "CHARLES III D G REX F D 20 PENCE" names the monarch and the face value of 20 pence.

The Royal Mint: more than 1,100 years of minting craftsmanship

Behind the Britannia stands one of the most tradition-rich mints in the world. The Royal Mint looks back on more than eleven centuries of history and today mints coins in Llantrisant, Wales. Its bullion coins enjoy great international trust. The silver Britannia, alongside the gold edition, is its flagship product. The 2027 year of issue is available in silver in 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce.

Why silver? A metal with history and a future

Silver has accompanied humanity for millennia as a monetary metal and store of value. Paper money depends solely on trust in governments. Silver, on the other hand, has an intrinsic value based on its physical properties. In addition, there is strong demand from industry: in electronics, solar technology and medical technology, this white precious metal is barely replaceable. Supply, meanwhile, is limited.

Small denominations in particular play to their strengths when it comes to flexibility. A tenth of an ounce can be sold individually, serves as a means of exchange for smaller amounts, and makes a lovely gift for a birth, confirmation, or simply as a gesture. Silver is also very durable. If stored well, such a coin can be passed down through generations. For investors in Germany, the following also applies: profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.

1/10 oz or would you prefer a full ounce of silver?

Ten of these coins together contain exactly as much fine silver as a 1-ounce Britannia, namely around 31.1 grams. The tenth-ounce coin scores points for divisibility and a low entry price. However, the premium per gram is naturally higher for small coins than for their larger counterpart. Anyone wanting as much metal as possible for their money should opt for the full ounce. Anyone who values flexibility and the joy of collecting is best served by the small silver Britannia coin.

A comparison with the gold Britannia is also interesting. The 1/10 oz gold version also measures 16.50 mm but bears the anniversary mark "40", as the gold version celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2027. Together, the two coins make an appealing pair for collectors.

Britannia 2027 as a tenth-ounce coin: 3.11 g fine silver, 20 pence face value, Brilliant Uncirculated in a coin capsule. An anniversary piece from the Royal Mint that fits into any collection.
