The path of the sun
Twelve sections of a year.
Leo is the fifth of the twelve sections.
Seen from the Earth, the sun travels once around the sky against the stars over the course of a year, along the ecliptic.
The signs divide this path into twelve equal sections of 30 degrees each, counted from the vernal equinox point, the position of the sun at the start of spring. The constellations of the same names differ in size.
Because the Earth’s axis slowly turns like a spinning top, once in about 26,000 years, the vernal equinox point has moved by about 30 degrees since the Greek Hipparchus. Signs and constellations are therefore offset today by about one constellation.
For more than 2,500 years
In cuneiform, in books, on clocks.
- BabylonThe cuneiform series MUL.APIN, preserved in copies from the 7th century BC onwards, names 17 constellations along the ecliptic.
- PtolemyAround AD 150, Ptolemy gathered more than a thousand stars into 48 constellations in the Almagest. At its core, our system today is his.
- Très Riches HeuresIn the book of hours of the Duke of Berry, now in Chantilly, each month’s picture shows the two zodiac signs of the month at the top.
- PragueThe astronomical clock has stood on the Old Town Hall since 1410, today with calendar, zodiac and clock.

The lion has always been regarded as the king of animals. This very sovereignty radiates from the new 0.5-gram coin from the 2027 Zodiac series. Its true essence, however, is more tangible: half a gram of fine gold. This makes it more than just a collector's coin, whose price is mainly driven by enthusiasts. It is full-fledged investment gold and ranks among the most refined small gold coins of the new year of issue. Kettner Edelmetalle has limited the edition to just 1,000 pieces.
Powerful Design on Both Sides
On the obverse, a powerful lion gazes calmly and directly at the viewer. Its mane falls in countless, finely sculpted strands, with its front paws resting on an ornate pedestal. Above its head sits the astrological sign of Leo within a small medallion, with the inscription "LÖWE" (LEO) above it. A ring of all twelve zodiac signs and sparkling stars encircles the scene. Below, the inscription "0.5 g 9999 FINE GOLD" states the weight and purity.
The reverse depicts a radiant sun in the shape of a compass rose, at the center of which lies the national coat of arms of Liberia. A zodiac wheel divided into twelve segments runs around it. At the top are the face value and year of minting, "25 DOLLARS 2027", and at the bottom "REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA".
Proof Quality: Mirror Finish on 14 Millimeters
Highly polished dies and carefully prepared blanks are used to achieve the Proof minting quality. The result is deep, mirror-like fields against which the frosted relief stands out with razor-sharp precision. This creates an astonishing level of detail on a diameter of just 14 mm. The coin is protected in a capsule within the coincard. Its front shows the lion against a cosmic starry sky, along with the date range of July 23 to August 22 and the traits "confident, generous, charismatic". The reverse bears the motto "Twelve Signs – Infinite Stories".
Investment Gold with a Personal Touch
Despite its personal connection to the zodiac sign, what you are acquiring here is full-fledged investment gold: minted fine gold whose value is tied to the gold price. Small denominations make building wealth in stages easy. Anyone who regularly adds half a gram will build up a considerable gold holding over the years. It remains flexible and tangible, and can be sold again at any time.
Give genuine investment gold as a gift for the birthday of someone born under Leo, for a christening, or for a graduation. You are not giving an accessory, but a real asset. Thanks to the very low mintage, each individual coin is a small rarity among small gold coin issues. The substance, however, always remains the fine gold it contains.

0.5 g in Comparison: Which Denomination Suits You?
- Compared to 1/200 ounce (around 0.16 g): More than three times the amount of fine gold and a significantly larger, more detailed coin design.
- Compared to 1 gram: Half the entry threshold at the same fineness, allowing for a particularly fine-tuned gold investment.
- Compared to 1/10 ounce (3.11 g): Larger coins offer more gold per euro of minting cost. Half a gram, on the other hand, stands out with a low entry point and greater flexibility if you later want to sell only partial amounts.
- Compared to a small gold bar: Bars focus purely on weight. The coin additionally offers an official face value and the elaborate Proof minting quality.
Gold – The Oldest Currency in the World
For more than 6,000 years, gold has served as a store of value. Already in ancient Egypt, it was a unit of measure for trade, and both kings and emperors wore it as a symbol of their power. Later, for much of the 19th and 20th centuries, the gold standard formed the foundation of monetary systems: paper money could be exchanged at any time for a fixed amount of gold. Currencies come and go. Gold remains.
Gold has never had a value of zero, for it possesses an intrinsic value that no printing press can increase.
To this day, central banks remain among the largest holders of gold in the world. Many investors also view the precious metal as a building block for inflation hedging and crisis protection. Gold is traded worldwide, retains its physical properties across generations, and can easily be converted into cash. A tax advantage: in Germany, profits from the sale of physical gold are generally tax-free after a holding period of more than one year.
With the 0.5 g Gold Zodiac Leo 2027 in Proof, you secure a piece of this millennia-old history: royal in appearance and solid in substance.
