Anyone who values the Gold Sovereign can hardly overlook this set. Among British gold coins, it has always held first rank. In the 2027 Proof Set, the Royal Mint brings together all denominations of this famous gold coin, from the delicate Quarter-Sovereign to the stately Five-Sovereign Piece. Five coins. One design. And a mintage of just 400 pieces worldwide.

Saint George: A design making history since 1817

On the reverse of each coin, Saint George rides against the dragon. Benedetto Pistrucci created this depiction for the modern Sovereign, first minted in 1817 under King George III. From atop his rearing horse, the knight—armed only with a helmet, a flowing cloak, and a short sword—vanquishes the beast. The image symbolises courage and the triumph of good over evil. The initials "B.P." and the year 2027 complete the composition.

The obverse features the uncrowned portrait of King Charles III, designed by sculptor Martin Jennings. The classic legend "CHARLES III · DEI · GRA · REX · FID · DEF" runs around the edge. In Proof quality, this creates that fascinating contrast between a mirror-polished background and frosted relief that collectors so love about Proof coins. The dies are hand-finished. Each blank is individually placed and struck up to six times, more slowly and with less pressure than for ordinary issues.

The five coins at a glance

  • Five-Sovereign Piece (£5): 39.94 g, 36.02 mm
  • Double-Sovereign (£2): 15.98 g, 28.40 mm
  • Sovereign (£1): 7.99 g, 22.05 mm
  • Half-Sovereign (50 pence): 3.99 g, 19.30 mm
  • Quarter-Sovereign (25 pence): 2.00 g, 13.50 mm

Together, the five coins contain 64.07 g of fine gold with a total face value of £8.75. All issues are made of 22-carat gold with a fineness of 916.67/1,000 and feature a reeded edge. The alloy makes them significantly more resistant to scratching than soft fine gold. The Royal Mint already returned to traditional yellow gold with the 2026 year of issue and continues this in 2027. What's new is that for the 2027 collector's collection, it uses fully recycled gold for the first time.

Sovereign or Britannia? A brief comparison

The Britannia, made of 999.9 fine gold, is the Royal Mint's modern bullion classic. The Sovereign, by contrast, embodies over two centuries of British coinage history and was once circulating currency throughout the Empire. Its 22-carat alloy is more robust, and its denominations are smaller and more flexible. Compared to individual bullion Sovereigns, the Proof Set carries a collector's premium. In return, you receive the strictly limited complete series of a single year of issue in mirror-finish Proof quality. Those who prefer a smaller scale can opt for the three-coin set. However, the Sovereign reveals its full splendour only in the five-coin set.

Gold: The world's oldest currency

For over 6,000 years, people have trusted in gold. Even in ancient Egypt it served as a measure for trade, and kings and emperors alike wore it as a symbol of their power. Paper currencies have come and gone, but gold has endured. It possesses intrinsic value, is traded worldwide, and has never been worth zero. As an inflation hedge, it helps preserve purchasing power when central banks continuously bring new money into circulation.

Tellingly, the world's largest gold holders are, of all institutions, the central banks—the very institutions that issue fiat money themselves.

This precious metal has also proven its worth as crisis protection in times of political and economic turmoil. Gold is scarce, durable, and highly liquid. As silver's big brother, it is ideally suited for passing on wealth across generations.

  • Profits are generally tax-free after a minimum holding period of one year
  • As investment gold, it is generally exempt from VAT
  • Limited supply, unlike paper money, which can be created without limit
  • Recognised worldwide and convertible into cash at any time

A treasure for collectors and investors

The 2027 Sovereign Five-Coin Set is delivered in a high-quality Royal Mint presentation case together with a certificate of authenticity. It combines tradition, craftsmanship, and genuine gold content in an object that presents beautifully. Whether as the centrepiece of your collection or as a special gift for the next generation: with this set, you secure a piece of living British history.
