Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, affectionately known as "Oom Paul" (Uncle Paul), was President of the South African Republic (1882–1902), a military hero and symbol of resistance. As a conservationist, he founded the Sabie Game Reserve in 1898, which in 1926 became the legendary Kruger National Park came to be.
